At long last, special ed gets attention

THE EDITOR: I am glad special education was highlighted and given much deserved attention at an education consultation I attended earlier this week. I hope the concerns and suggestions raised by many people will not fall on deaf ears but will be taken seriously and become policy.

Many promises were made to parents and special needs schools by the last government yet nothing was done to help these students. The Ministry of Education has shown some level of seriousness by engaging various groups involved in special needs over the past two years.

I know they have provided help for special needs students who sat the SEA exams this year and many of these students passed their SEA exam and are now attending secondary school. I would like to recommend to the ministry that more time be allotted to children with varying special needs in order to give them a fair chance at excelling.

I like many others who attended the event at the UTT and expressed various views, look forward for quick action to see our suggestions implemented for the benefit of our students.
