In keeping with the theme of World Sight Day on October 11, “Eye Care Everywhere,” the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA), in collaboration with the Blind Welfare Association and Tobago Eye Care, is offering free vision screening over a two-week period.

The screenings began at the Gulf City Mall, Lowlands on October 1 and continued daily at James Park, at the Scarborough Prison, The Greens at the Port and the Scarborough Library. More than 340 persons were screened in Week 1 of the campaign, with several persons being referred to the Eye Clinic at the Scarborough General Hospital (SGH) for further management.

This week, the dedicated team of optometrists will operate from strategic Health Centres and at the Store Bay Facility.

Coordinator of the outreach programme, Madelynn Waldron, an Optometrist at the TRHA Eye Clinic, said that the team was encouraged with the turnout.

“So far our outreach has been a resounding success. We wanted to meet people where they are and to reach as many as possible and we are pleasantly surprised by the response that we have received from the general public as they are quite eager to participate in the screenings. It is always encouraging to know that people are interested in their overall health and well-being as sight is very often taken for granted,” she said

Screenings will continue from 9 am to 2pm today at the Canaan Health Centre, tomorrow at the Store Bay Facility from 10 am to 3 pm, and on Friday from 10 am to 3 pm at the Roxborough Health Centre.
