Let’s say no Toco port

THE EDITOR: So, the infamous Toco ferry port has been mentioned again in the PNM’s budget presentation on Monday. No surprise there as there must be some reason it desperately wants the port to be built. Maybe it’s for their benefit alone.

It certainly won’t benefit the country – not the residents of Toco, not the natural surroundings (both land and sea), not any future ferry commuters, not the threatened sea turtles and their nesting sites, not their mating behaviours.

So congrats to the Minister of Finance for alerting me once again to the PNM’s continued attempts to destroy another natural resource of our beautiful country.

I hope all citizens, animal enthusiasts and conservation groups, both locally and internationally, and the local sea turtle groups/foundations such as Nature Seekers and Earthwatch are not only taking notice of this but are preparing to say no to the Toco ferry port.

I’m doing my part by spreading the word on how ridiculous this ferry port idea is. If we allow this to happen, as we have allowed the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway extension through the Aripo Savannas to happen, then I fear for not only the leatherback turtle population but for the understanding and intelligence of citizens of TT.
