PORT OF SPAIN city engineer Jason Lala is in a battle for his job, as the city council yesterday moved a motion for him to be replaced.
At the council’s statutory meeting held at City Hall, Port of Spain, the motion was moved by Belmont North and West councillor Akil Durham.
Durham said through their executive officer and community meetings, they have raised several motions and also spoken with the CEO of the Port of Spain corporation.
“We have gotten a dossier of letters that the CEO has written to the city engineer regarding his role and function, and his conduct as the city engineer in his performance of such duties or lack thereof. We decided we have had enough, and the citizens and burgesses of Port of Spain have been crying out about work to be done.
“It was just this morning councillor for Belmont South was coming down Frederick Street and a gentleman tripped in a hole in the road on Frederick and Park Streets. It just underscores the city engineer is not doing his work and not doing what is expected of him.”
Durham said workers must be managed by the city engineer in order to get performance.
Ag mayor Hillan Morean said he expects the Minister of Local Government will act quickly.
“This is the capital city, we cannot afford to have this kind of lethargy.
We expect a quick response because the council has set about on a strategic objective for over the next year and we want to achieve these objectives. The only way to do that is to have a full team that is committed.
“The council cannot direct the pace of the ministry, but we are letting the ministry know that this is an untenable situation. The city has moved a clear motion and we want to see some action on it.”
When contacted, Rural Development and Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein said he was not aware of the situation, but once he gets the report on the motion the matter will be addressed.
