Students perform “exceedingly well” CAPE, CSEC 2018

The Division of Education has announced that Tobago students performed “exceedingly well” at the 2018 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. The Division announced in a release that some 360 students wrote the 2018 CAPE exams in Tobago and that the overall pass rate was 92.7 percent, compared to 91.2 percent in 2016 to 92.9 percent in 2017.

It added that for this year, 434 subject entries attained Grades I & II, an increase from 366 entries achieving Grades I and II in 2017.

The Division said 921 candidates from Government and Government-assisted schools wrote the CSEC exams with passing grades (Grades I, II & III) obtained in 62.9 percent of the subject entries, representing an improvement from the 59.5 percent of the subject entries who achieved passing grades in 2017.

The Division said that at CAPE, students continue to showcase quality performance, though there was a slight decline (1.6 percent) in the male students’ pass rate while females registered an increase (0.2 percent).

It said students continue to maintain a pass rate well above 80 per cent with eight subjects registering attainment rates of 100 percent in Unit I and 10 subjects in Unit II, recording attainment rates of 100 percent.

“In CSEC, a total of seven out of nine schools had an improvement in their pass rate this year. This achievement means that our Tobago schools have experienced performance improvement at a rate of 77.7 percent. The Division confirms that statistics reveal Tobago has experienced an increase from previous years. It also means that the district has moved from a pass rate of 30.5 in 2012 to 42.3 in 2018,” the release said.

The Division pledged its its commitment to developing and maintaining quality education in Tobago and congratulated students who “performed remarkably well and their hard-working teachers.

“May this trend of excellence be maintained and continued as we remain committed to the development of Tobago’s education sector,” the release added.
