AT the intersection of Belmont Circular Road and the Queen’s Park Savannah, passersby yesterday saw an eyesore created by debris, opposite the green of the Savannah.
Workers from the Port of Spain City Corporation who were part of the clearing team said the debris was dumped last there and they were contacted to remove it.

One of the men, Dale Olive, said he did not know which organisation dumped the items on the site, but said the bedding, clothing and destroyed pieces of furniture were gathered from flooded areas.

“All these mattresses and clothes are from the flood victims from the hills of North Trinidad,” said Olive.
Port of Spain Mayor Joel Martinez said the the area is generally used as a first point of dumping.
Silt from land slippage is usually dumped in the area, after which they are transported to the Beetham landfill.

Martinez said it is likely that when the silt was picked up and removed from drains, other items that would have been washed into the waterways would have also been picked up by the clearing team.
The team is working to complete clearing of the area and said they hoped to finish during the weekend.
