Uncaring message by TTUTA

THE EDITOR: I totally disagree with the views expressed by TTUTA in its weekly commentary of July 31,which said teachers should not be distributing breakfast and lunches to students.

It is very disappointing that the union is now advocating that teachers should stop demonstrating love and compassion for their students. This is a very uncaring message from the union, not only to students and parents, but the entire citizenry.

I hope TTUTA is not also planning to demand financial compensation for this act of kindness.

I know this is not a legal responsibility of a teacher. However, people from my generation would know TTUTA was started in the 1980s because of the need to develop a union that is professional and caring.

Teachers back then were caring and acted as parents, doctors, nurses, lawyers, police and community workers. This latest stance clearly demonstrates the union has lost its moorings under its present leadership.

Teaching is not only about teaching in a formal classroom and delivering a written curriculum. It’s also a very humanistic profession and those who choose to be teachers do not only accept the great challenge of imparting knowledge and guidance, but are also role models and motivators for students.

The sole reward of teaching can be inner satisfaction and not rewards such as money and power as offered by other professions.
