Valuable lesson at Customs

THE EDITOR: Much is said about our broken institutions and their operating systems but little is said about the kind, hard-working people who, day in and day out, work under such conditions.

A recent experience has taught me a very valuable lesson which brought to life the words of Dale Carnegie: “Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”

In light of this I would like to thank the staff at Customs at Dock Road, Port of Spain, who worked on August 6, for their kindness and patience even under pressure. Working under a disorganised system, Mrs Harvey tried her best to keep everything under control.

There was a young man I can’t help but admire – Jaleel Thomas; he was so very helpful. The senior Customs officer who had to work alone deserves recognition for his dedication.

I do hope things improve at Customs so that life would be easy for both the staff and the public.
