Be the best you can be

THE EDITOR: Whatever our background, no one living in Trinidad today was born a slave. We are from many nationalities and have intermarried over several years, to make us all citizens of TT. We need to read our history, to educate ourselves, to know that we were born free.

It is up to everyone of us from young to study and learn not to become delinquent or dependent on our country. We must love and respect ourselves and others, then give a helping hand when needed, with a smile.

Look around the world – where would you rather be? There are wars, suicide bombings, violence, rapes, floodings, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, wildfires, and scorching temperatures – 48 degrees C now in Europe?

A new Commissioner of Police has been elected, so we are filled with hope that crime will abate. Some are upset as the Opposition abstained from voting. This opposing is the behaviour of every political party in opposition. They oppose everything in Parliament, so our country has stagnated.

We need both sides in Parliament to come together to change the outdated laws, to think of our country first and stop displaying the childish behaviour which we are fed up with. And the world outside is reading about us and watching us.

The unions need to encourage workers to do their jobs to the best of their ability. Yet again, another international survey, reported last week, finds the TT workforce among the highest listed as “non-productive.”

Too much lavish partying at every corner and “handouts” by whichever government has access to taxpayers’ money. All this to win votes and encourage idleness.

Sign up in the morning for Cepep, go off to your regular job, and then return early enough in the afternoon to sign out. Corruption at every level. How can any country survive this, and for how long?

If we are to save TT, we need to get rid of this “entitlement” attitude that many of us believe is our due. If it is not working for you, it is because you are not trying hard enough. Be the change that we all need to be to save our beautiful twin-island country.
