Bhagwandass remembered as ‘a great and humble man’

FORMER North West Regional Health Authority chairman Dr Andy Bhagwandass was remembered as a “great and humble man” whose faith in God enabled him to “fight the good fight until the end.”

Bhagwandass, 49, died suddenly over the weekend.

He was remembered by close friend Barataria/San Juan MP Dr Fuad Khan, who seemed unable to come to terms with Bhagwandass’s sudden death, saying he last spoke to him on Friday to discuss a patient.

“That call early Saturday morning will never be forgotten. After the trauma of such terrible news, in my quiet moments, I started to think about the fragility of life. One minute you are here, the next, you are gone.
“Over the past few days I have started giving thanks before I go to sleep and give thanks when I wake up.”

The funeral took place at the Susamachar Presbyterian Church, Coffee Street, San Fernando yesterday. There was hardly any space in the church, as mourners filled every corner long before the scheduled 11.30am start.

Khan, in one of several moving tributes to Bhagwandass, said he was a man of integrity whose patients had absolute belief in him and who was not concerned with a person’s social status.
“Andy, you make me cry, and I haven’t cried for a very, very long time. Goodbye Andy.”
Also delivering a tribute was High Court Judge Justice Gillian Lucky, who said Bhagwandass always stood for what is right, and did not tolerate corruption in any of its forms.

Retired deputy commissioner of police Wayne Dick said Bhagwandass made invaluable contributions to the fight against crime and was always available whenever he was called on to assist the police.

There was a request for the media not to take photographs at the funeral.
The cremation took place at Belgrove’s Funeral Home, Coffee Street, San Fernando.
