Checker on $30,000 bail

A WOMAN employed with the Princes Town Regional Corporation was placed on bail after she appeared in court last week charged with larceny of $30,000.

She was arrested on Thursday following a report and subsequent investigations by Fraud Squad officers. In October 2016, Subhash Rampersad of Garth Road, Princes Town reported to police that he paid $30,000 to the checker, as down payment towards clearing of Port and Custom Fees and delivery of a Nissan Tiida car valued $60,000 from the Port of Spain port.

The vehicle was expected to be delivered in seven days. When Rampersad failed to get the vehicle he asked for a refund but was unsuccessful. He reported the matter to the Fraud Squad.

On Thursday last, the woman was arrested following an exercise under the supervision of Snr Supt Dookhie and including Insp Mathura, Sgt Badree, Cpl Bassarath, Cpl Toney and other officers from the Fraud Squad Office, San Fernando. Cpl Toney charged the woman for the offence of Larceny in the sum of $30,000.

She appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court on Friday before Senior Magistrate Rae Roopchand and pleaded not guilty. The woman was granted $30,000 bail with a surety and the matter was adjourned to October 14.
