Tobago prisoner captured shortly after escape

A 22-year-old man who escaped police custody after appearing before a Scarborough magistrate yesterday, was recaptured almost an hour later in Scarborough.

Shauneil Charles of Golden Lane, Tobago was in court charged with possession of ammunition, several counts of dangerous driving and possession of marijuana.

The matter was adjourned and Charles was ordered remanded into custody.

Just after 11am, he was in the holding cell downstairs the court when he asked police officers to allow him to use the toilet. Newsday was told by a security guard that when Charles was removed from the holding cell, he bolted past the officer and through an open door.

Charles is the grandson of former Tobago House of Assembly chief secretary Hochoy Charles.
