Five in court for mini mart owner’s murder

FIVE men appeared today before a Sangre Grande magistrate in connection with the murder of 53-year-old mini-mart owner John Samaroo on June 21.

They are 21-year-old Torrance “Bully” Villafana, 22-year-old Justin Durity, 25-year-old Javon “Mickey” Moora, 32-year-old Ferdinand “Ferdi” Moora and 46-year-old Bonifacio “Chin” Moora all of Guaico Tamana, Sangre Grande. They have been charged with conspiracy to murder while Villafana is on the additional charge of murder.

Senior Magistrate Gillian Scotland adjourned the matter to tomorrow.

Samaroo, the owner of J&J Mini Mart, also of Guaico Tamana, was outside his business place when he was approached by masked men who slit his throat. He died at the scene. His wife, who heard him cry out, went to help him but was also attacked by one of the men who tried to slit her throat.

The men ran off and the woman was taken to the hospital.

The suspects were arrested between July 1 and 7at their respective homes and later charged after advice was received from Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Honore-Paul on Tuesday.

Investigations were supervised by Insp Andrew Lawrence and Sgt Hezron Lynch of the Homicide Bureau Region 2 while Cpl Daryl Seecharan laid the charges.
