An unidentified bandit who robbed a Chinese shop owner on Tuesday night with three accomplices was shot dead by police.

One of the others was shot by a prison officer and remained under police guard at hospital yesterday. Police were expected to take prints from the man to try to identify him.

Around 8 pm the four bandits, two armed with guns, arrived at the Chinese supermarket, Jun Lin's, on the Old Golden Grove Road, directly opposite the Senior Prison Officers’ Quarters.

As the bandits were running into the supermarket, a prison officer who was about to go in saw what was happening and tried to leave to tell other officers about the robbery. One of the bandits confronted him and tried to push him into the supermarket, but he shot the bandit. The officer was helped by one of his colleagues, who held a second bandit who was trying to escape.
