San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello has said a lot of background work is presently being done before infrastructural work can begin on the San Fernando waterfront development project. He expects work to start by September.

The project, which is being overseen by the Ministry of Planning and Development, is expected to be completed in phases with phase one being the upgrade of the Plaza San Carlos Historical District.

The project includes the reclamation of 3.8 hectares of land at King’s Wharf North, the relocation of the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) Garage and Maintenance facility at Lady Hailes Avenue and the relocation of the squatters from King’s Wharf.

Regrello on Thursday said the while the ministry was the project’s chief executing agent, the relevant approvals had been received including from the Environmental Management Authority, the Institute of Marine Affairs and Town and Country Planning Division.

“There is a lot of background work that needs to be done but some infrastructure work may be done shortly,” he said.
