For Shakrise Caruth, the Life Skills Workshop series held last week by the Youth Energised for Success Programme (YES) at the Victor E Bruce Financial Complex encouraged her to make saving a serious practice to prevent debts.

“What stood out for me was time management, financial success and smart goal setting. The programme has empowered me to be a better youth and some of the topic discussed are pertinent to today’s society and as a young professional it was relevant to my growth,” she said in an interview with Newsday Tobago.

Caruth was one of 38 young people, between the ages of 18-35, who graduated from the programme which was held from May 21-25 and designed for the personal and professional development of young Tobagonians.

At a closing ceremony at the Victor E Bruce Financial Complex, Scarborough, on Friday, participants were urged to gain assets, set goals and practice effective time management.

For 21-year-old Daniela Isaac of Mt Grace, the week of interactive sessions provided a “wealth of knowledge” on money, time and life management. Isaac said her focus now was on setting goals.

“I enjoyed the self-awareness session… Also time management, the difference between assets and liabilities and why building assets from an early age is important for the future to increase our net worth,” she said.

For Travis Sebro, the programme was a refresher course. “It is never too late to refresh your memory because it will help you focus on goals made years ago. This has encouraged me to self-conceptualise how I am as a person and to differentiate who I and where I am, to where I want to be,” he said.

The week-long workshops dealt with a range of topics - understanding self, managing the environment, interpersonal relationship skills and communication – all intended to expose participants to educational, social, health and economic benefits. The YES programme seeks to expand and enhance training, employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities of young Tobagonians.
