DESPITE government’s expressed intention to appeal yesterday’s ruling by Justice Devindra Rampersad in relation to the anti-buggery laws, gay-rights activist Jason Jones is calling on Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to stand by him and offer support to the LGBTQI community as he attends the 25th annual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next week.

Jones made the remarks after a press conference at the Euphoria Lounge, Dundonald Street Port of Spain yesterday, in which he called for greater support from Rowley and said despite the intention to appeal the matter it would be a powerful statement from the leader of a Commonwealth country. Citing the fact that 36 of the 53 Commonwealth states criminalise homosexuality, Jones said the PM should be proud of his citizens taking a progressive approach to persons of different sexual orientations.

Jones said while he was disappointed in government’s decision to appeal the ruling, he said he understood the challenges associated with their duties and was pleased with the support from Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other members of the Opposition.
