Missing statistics

THE EDITOR: In a feature story in the Sunday Newsday of March 25, headlined “Domestic violence, not by accident,” statistics were given on domestic violence reports and domestic violence homicides between 2013 and 2017.

The first category was divided into female and male reports, showing that reports by men constitute just quarter of all such reports. Curiously, the second category, homicides, offered no such breakdown but only gave the total number of domestic violence victims.

Had that disaggregation been provided, it would have shown that men on average comprise 43 per cent of all domestic murder victims. Which, of course, raises issues that aren’t discussed by most commentators, and certainly no domestic violence activists.
