Universities invite Carmona

FORMER president Anthony Carmona is looking at short-term offers of short-term engagement made to him by several foreign universities and international organisations, Office of the President spokesman Theron Boodan told Newsday yesterday.

Asked if Carmona might head to the Netherlands-based International Criminal Court (ICC), where he was once a judge, Boodan said no, explaining that the former president has two young children who are still engaged in their education, which he did not want disrupted by moving abroad.

Boodan also pointed out that in TT a legal restriction is imposed on any former judge such as Carmona returning to private practice as an attorney. This restriction lasts ten years after leaving the bench, where the usual retirement age for a judge is 65.

“A lot of foreign agencies and universities and so on have been in contact with him to come a do a two months or three months of lecturing with them on contract. I don’t know where that has reached, but they’ve been asking.”

Boodan said Carmona is highly-respected internationally. “He’s also a strong, strong family man, looking after his children.” Asked if Carmona might write his memoirs, Boodan said, “Well, now is a little too early, but maybe. Give it some time.”
