Police need help with recruitment

THE EDITOR: It would appear that things are going from bad to worse where the police are concerned. Over the past recent months there have been reports of policemen, with quite a few years’ service, jumping on the criminal bandwagon at an alarming rate.

The latest news of a young policeman with only one year service being charged with stealing service equipment from a police station is food for thought and adds another nail in the coffin of recruitment methods.

Something must be drastically wrong with the background checks when recruiting for local policemen. On the other hand, I suppose because of the mentality of our ordinary citizens, especially the young, the police are now left with no other choice.

It however now appears that the Police Service may be loaded with potential criminals.

As I have repeatedly said before, the police hierarchy urgently needs outside help and this seems now to involve even the recruiting methods. I wonder what’s next?
