Keep the Extempo clean

THE EDITOR: I must make mention of the standard or lack of it at the extempo competition on Thursday at the Grand Stand.

While I enjoyed some of the “picong” in the preliminary rounds (some of which were disappointing), I cannot help but voice my dislike for the trend that the final rounds between Gypsy and Myron B took. I need not elaborate on this but suffice it to say that while their executions were flawless, some of their comments were tasteless.

While I know that extempo is not an easy thing – as a matter of fact, I have always said that the extempo champ should get as much prize money as the soca or calypso monarchs as this part of our artform requires much more skill and intelligence to perfect on the spot – discretion should be exercised. So my simple suggestion is that the rules of the competition should mandate, if they do not already, that the content should be kept at a certain level of ethics or the judges can see it fit to disqualify the offender or simply award the victory to the opponent.

Other than that, hats off to the organisers for a well put together show with great guest appearances. Hard luck to Black Sage for not making it to the final two, but you done know how it goes Sage. Don’t give up.
