Landslides danger in Coryal
THE EDITOR: Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan’s intervention is urgently needed in getting works done on the dangerous landslides threatening to make the Cumuto Main Road impassable, just before the junction in Howsen Village, Coryal. And also the depression on Bonair Road that makes users feel like they are in an aircraft experiencing turbulence. I believe that since we are awaiting the decision from the High Court on whether the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway extension between Cumuto and Sangre Grande will proceed — following a lawsuit by environmental lobby Fishermen and Friends of the Sea — the Aripo Savannas, an environmentally sensitive area, should be preserved to protect delicate habitat and rare species.
Although I have no objection to the highway being built, I believe that with the downturn in the economy it would be prudent at this time to fix the roads needing urgent attention. And more emphasis should be placed on the main and secondary roads throughout the length and breadth of the country.
Why rush to construct a highway when there are so many roads that have been neglected for very long time? It clearly shows the Government is getting its priorities wrong.
It’s my duty as a community activist to highlight the problems in Cumuto/Tamana. The minister needs to move urgently and bring some relief to affected residents.
