Police looking for wining thieves

POLICE yesterday issued one final warning, that police officers would be out in force and would detain any person assaulting others during Carnival – including those thiefing a wine. He also encouraged people who are victims of any form of assault to come forward to police officers.

“There would be some offences where police would have to depend on people who are being offended to lodge a report, and defend that,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Deodath Dulalchan yesterday at the weekly police press briefing.

Dulalchan, who is also acting as the Gold Commander of the Carnival operations, told reporters yesterday that police would be out in force and keeping an eye out for those engaged in any physical confrontations. He added that, according to the law, thiefing a wine or gyrating on another person without their consent is still considered assault.

He also added that police would be manning the entrances to Carnival villages and would scan and search members of the public whom they suspect may have a weapon.

In the event of a physical altercation, Dulalchan said there would be areas to confine people who have gotten into fights, or have had too much to drink.

“We are here to facilitate the Carnival. We want everyone to come out and have a good time, but what we want is for people to comply with the law.”
