Inmate Unil Phillip, charged for arms and ammunition and serving six years’ imprisonment with hard labour yesterday escaped from the Carrera Island prison.

In a brief interview, Commissioner of Prisons Gerard Wilson said Phillip was being escorted to his supervisor when he ran away from a prison officer and dived into the sea.

“I do not have all the documents in front of me but I know that the prisoner escaped at around 3.50 pm.

The TT Coast Guard came and saw him in the water but he took another dive and has not resurfaced since. They are currently searching the waters for him.

“I am still awaiting further information,” Commissioner Wilson said.

Prison Officers Association president Ceron Richards said, “The Coast Guard is searching the waters off Carrera as we speak.

“The prisoner made a dash for freedom and they are looking for him. We are hopeful the prisoner is apprehended and brought back to the prison.”
