Mother, son, among five charged with sexual assault on girls, 12

Five people including a mother and her son appeared in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with a slew of sexual offences against two 12-year-old girls.

They were all remanded into custody for tracing and are expected to return to court on Tuesday. One of the girls is said to be four months pregnant.

Four of the five accused were held during a sting exercise by the Southern Division Child Protection Unit (CPU) and the South Western Division CPU between Thursday and yesterday, while one of them surrendered at the Princes Town police station yesterday morning.

Two of the accused are mother and son, while the other two are cousins. The fifth accused is a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named as he is still considered a minor.

The charges were laid by Cpl Nicole St John of the Southern Division CPU and the matters came up for hearing before Magistrate Michelle Maharajh-Brown.

It is alleged that Shelly Ann Springer, of New Grant, Princes Town, a date unknown between January 1 and December 31, 2015, sexually penetrated a girl, who was ten years old at the time, at North Trace, New Grant. She was also charged with two counts of sexually touching a ten-year-old girl in the same time period at the same place.

The charge against her 22-year-old son Tarique Alleyne read that on a date unknown between January 1 and December 31, 2015 at North Trace New Grant, he sexually penetrated a ten-year-old girl. He was also charged on a second count of sexual penetration between the same dates at the same location.

Cousins 19-year-old Jonathon and 20-year-old Tyrell Cummins, both of Princes Town, were represented by attorney Spencer Harrison.

Jonathon was charged with sexually penetrating a 12-year-old girl at Bonanza Street, Princes Town on a date unknown between July 1 and August 31 this year. Tyrell was charged with three counts of sexual penetration of a 12-year-old girl and one count of sexually touching a 12-year-old girl.

The 17-year-old boy was charged with sexually penetrating a 12-year-old girl, at Bonanza Street, Princes Town, on a date unknown between July 1 and August 31 this year. The girl is related to him. Another charge of sexual penetration of the girl, on a date unknown between January 1 and December 31, 2016, was also laid against him.

He faced a third charge of sexually touching a 12-year-old girl between July 1 and August 31 this year.

The fourth charge laid against him was that between July 1 and August 31 this year he sexually penetrated a 12-year-old girl knowing her to be his relative. He was remanded to the Youth Training Centre.

None of the accused were called upon to enter pleas as the charges were laid indictably. They are expected to return to court on Tuesday.
