Tidings of good cheer and wishes for peace and goodwill to all during this Christmas season are even sweeter when they come from children.

Since the start of December, schools throughout Laventille/Morvant have been involved in the Laventille/Morvant Schools’ Improvement Project Unit where they performed for employees of the Education Ministry.

On Thursday, students from the Our Lady of Laventille RC, Rosehill RC, Piccadilly Government and St Barb’s Government primary schools sang their hearts out and held their own with their dance steps.

Project co-ordinator Thora Best said the project was mandated by former prime minister Patrick Manning to improve the lives of the children in the Laventille area under infrastructure, discipline, parenting and education. “We have our Dollars For Dominica project where we ask each child to give us a dollar for Dominica, and they donate gifts for the children in Dominica,“ Best said. ”We thought this was an ideal way to marry all of those elements.”

Dominica was one of several Caribbean islands which suffered massive destruction with the passage of Category Five Hurricane Irma in September. Best said the 25 schools in the Laventille/Morvant area – 20 primary and five secondary schools – were invited to participate.

“They were invited to come and sing at the Education Ministry to share the joy, love and giving during the Christmas season, and offer their gifts to the ministry which would then distribute them to the children in Dominica,” Best said.
