Cops net $24.1M in drugs in massive bust

A Couva man appeared before a Tunapuna magistrate yesterday charged with having more than $24 million worth of cocaine and marijuana in his car trunk and at his home on Wednesday last. He was arrested by members of the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU).

Police said Outhar Maraj of McBean Village, Couva also had four guns and a quantity of assorted ammunition.

Outhar Maraj of Couva was arrested for the possession of $24.1 M in drugs when officers of the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) intercepted his vehicle last Wednesday.

Acting on an anonymous tip, the police said they intercepted Maraj while he was driving near the Valpark Shopping Plaza in Valsayn. They searched his car and allegedly found three white crocus bags and one black garbage bag containing 56.56 kilos of cocaine in the trunk with an estimate street value of $22.6 million.

A search warrant was obtained and police visited one of Maraj’s homes at Maruana Road, Valsayn and found 17.38 kilos of marijuana with an estimated street value of $1.5 million and two revolvers, two pistols and 331 rounds of ammunition.

Maraj is expected to reappear in court today.
