Tobagonians make big splash at Atlantic Meet

Eight swimmers from Tobago journeyed to the community swimming pool at Coronation Park, Egypt Village, Point Fortin on Sunday, to compete at the 2017 edition of the Atlantic Schools Invitational Swim Meet. The swimmers – seven primary school students and one from secondary school – engaged in fierce battle against all the educational institutions across Trinidad to return home with four overall podium spots and a total of 15 medals (7 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze).

This swim meet, which hosted a total of 300 participants, saw national swimmers Abrisse Trim (Signal Hill Government Primary School) and Jacob Cox (Bon Accord Government Primary School), along with Tamia Peterkin, Tiana Peterkin, Jaylon Campbell (Scarborough RC School), Theo Bicknell Roberts (St Nicholas Private Primary School), Timothy Clarke (Mason Hall Government Primary School) and Brianna Percy (Signal Hill Comprehensive Secondary School), all make Tobago proud.

Jacob Cox placed 1st overall in the Boys 8-9 Competitive Age Category, capturing three gold medals and one silver medal. Cox claimed gold in the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre butterfly and the 50-metre breaststroke event, followed by one silver medal in the 50-metre backstroke.

Abrisse Trim placed 2nd Overall in the Girls 8-9 Competitive Age Group, earning four medals – one gold, one silver medal and two bronze. Trim collected gold in the 50-metre butterfly, silver in the 50-metre freestyle and bronze in the 50-metre breaststroke and 50-metre backstroke events.

Jaylon Campbell placed 1st overall in the Boys 8-9 Non-Competitive Age Category, winning one gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Campbell struck gold in the 25-metre breaststroke, silver in the 25-metre kickboard event and bronze in the 25-metre backstroke.

Timothy Clarke also placed 1st overall in the Boys 10 and Over Non-Competitive Category, collecting three medals – two gold and one silver. Clarke won the 25-metre backstroke and 25-metre Kickboard event, and copped silver in the 25-metre freestyle.

Brianna Percy took bronze in the 50-metre backstroke in the Girls 11-13 Competitive Secondary School Age Category.

All eight of the swimmers, of whom the majority went under the tutelage of YMCA Aqua Warriors head coach Mosi Denoon.
