Prison officer arrested for trying to smuggle ganja into jail

A prison officer with 15 years service was arrested on Saturday after he was allegedly caught trying to smuggle marijuana into the Port of Spain prison on Frederick Street.

Newsday was told police believe the officer was intending to distribute the 11 packets of the illegal drug among prisoners. He was taken to the Belmont police station where he was charged with possession of marijuana.

He is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate.

In an interview with Newsday, Prison Officers Association president Cerron Richards made a call for prison officers found to be in breach of the law to be dismissed.

“The association is happy that such people were held and removed from the Prison Service,” Richards said.

“We continue to reiterate our call for the State to strengthen laws and become more stringent on prison officers caught committing offences. We are even looking at summary dismissal for officers caught conducting illegal activities.”
