SporTT begin transition to SCOTT

Douglas Camacho says he is hoping that over the next three months the first road map will be complete, as the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) begins the transition to the Sports Commission of Trinidad and Tobago (SCOTT).

Camacho will be the chairman of a nine-member Cabinet Committee to review and recommend changes as SporTT transitions into SCOTT.

The committee members are Camacho, Nicolette Duke, Hayden Manzano, Garvin Warwick, Marilyn Gordon, Dr Barry Ishmael, Brian Lewis, Hayden Mitchell and Annette Knott.

Talking about the committee’s plans, Camacho said structural changes must be made. “We have to review the whole administration and structure of sport effectively and make recommendations on the way forward,” Camacho said.

“(We need to develop) how the ministry should be structured and where their focus should be, and what institutions would need to support the ministry in the discharge of it.”

Camacho has a goal in mind of how long the first road map will be developed. He said, “We are hoping to do the first bit in three months. We need to analyse and prepare a report, map a way forward and if it is approved we will try to do the implementation over the following three months.”

Camacho said his team has already met where relevant documents were gathered, but will soon break up into subsets to progress more quickly.

Concerning the committee, Camacho said he has a competent team with him. “I think it is a good mix. Marilyn Gordon, who was one of the original people involved in the whole development of the original sport policy. Definitely a good team, some new blood. It is a good mix, a good balance.”

SporTT has been in the news for the wrong reasons recently, including the firing of five employees at the organisation. Former CEO Adam Monsterin was one of the five people fired from SporTT.

Camacho said forming a strong structural approach may help create a better image. “We can’t create a good image, what we can do is recommend a structural approach. Unfortunately, SporTT has been negatively in the news for the last six, seven years...it is no secret that they have had more chairmen and CEO’s than they have had years of existence.”

Camacho said a collaborative effort is required for sport to be successful. “It requires the cooperation and the relationship between the NSOs (National Sporting Organisations) and NGBs (National Governing Bodies). All the stakeholders need to engaged and be supportive to make it work at the end of the day. If relationships fall apart then I don’t care how sound or intelligent a structure is. At the end of the day people will make it work.”
