Yachtie had heart condition

Martin Waldrop, the 68-year-old British boating enthusiast and cruiser found dead aboard his yacht on Tuesday night, suffered from various medical conditions including a heart ailment, according to a close acquaintance and fellow mariner.

Newsday spoke to Waldrop’s friend who said his stepson who lives in England has been contacted and will arrive over the weekend to oversee his stepfather’s final rites.

“He didn’t have much relatives. To our knowledge the stepson was the closest thing to family he had. He is divorced, had no children of his own or siblings. He lived more or less by himself,” the friend said.

The man, who asked not to be identified, said little was known about Waldrop’s life before he came to Trinidad earlier this year. The man described Waldrop as an introvert, who lived aboard his yacht the Nanshee, which was docked at Chaguaramas. Waldrop would only leave his boat for food and other supplies. A close friend found Waldrop’s body on the deck of the yacht at about 11.30 pm on Tuesday.
