Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith was on hand to welcome the Trinidad and Tobago Soca Racers, who returned home to a welcome reception on Tuesday after the recently concluded final leg of the 2017 Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC), held in Guyana.

In his brief address to the contingent, Smith congratulated the TT team on an outstanding performance despite the challenges faced. The team managed to secure well over 1,000 points overall which allowed them to return home with what was described as “the most prestigious title in our region for motor sport” for the second time.

Smith reminded those in attendance that 2017 has been the most successful year in sport for TT, and pledged the Ministry’s continued support to the local motor sport fraternity as they prepare to host the first leg of the 2018 CMRC in March. He also urged corporate Trinidad to get involved and witness the camaraderie, action, and safety of the sport, as the team continues to represent the country with great pride.

“As Minister, I have mandated the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to get more youth and females in sport, and I commend the Trinidad and Tobago Automobile Association for heeding the call,” Smith said.

The TT soca racers will aim for a hat-trick of titles in 2018.
