Shelly-Ann Marcano, who placed first on the CAPE 2017 Regional Merit Listing for history, receives a trophy at Bishop Anstey High School East yesterday.

Past student of Bishop Anstey High School East (BATCE) Shelly-Ann Marcano said, although she placed first in the CAPE June 2017 Regional Merit Listing in the field of history, she was disappointed to see the number of scholarships awarded to natural science and mathematics opposed to social science and humanities which were awarded fewer.

Marcano was speaking yesterday at the awards scholarship ceremony at the school at College Avenue, Central Road, Trincity.

“If you look at the merit listing, history had six students only with ones. That is just to tell you how hard it is to get ones in a social science subject. We are always deemed as second-class citizens when it comes to the achievements of scholarships. It really hurt my heart, because today I can stand here proud to say I placed first in the Caribbean – yet I was not awarded a scholarship and it really hurt.” She said it showed where society was today; who and what citizens valued in society; and students in the field were always discouraged.

Eight students from the school were awarded scholarships, while 18 students were on the regional merit listing. All were presented with trophies. The scholarship winners include ICT Open Scholarship winner Danicia Solozano; Keiswanna Pierre – Business and Additional; Tai Rosemin – ICT and Additional; Raphael Superville – ICT and Additional; Jade Noriega – Mathematics and Additional; Laura Martinez-Garavito – Natural Sciences and Additional; Tia Gilkes – Natural Sciences and Additional; and Danissa McLeod-Irish – Natural Sciences and Additional.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Noel of the Trinity College (TRINCOL) board said it was a very proud moment for the school.

Noel urged the students to continue to set their goals high and never give up until they reached them.

“You have truly earned a place in the short but distinguished history of the BATCE schools. Always aim for excellence. The BATCE community, your parents, families and friends are all justly proud of you. Best wishes for your careers ahead.”
