Man fined for beating teen daughter

A Port of Spain father of three girls was convicted on Thursday of beating one of his daughters.

De Leon Celestine, 41, of East Dry River, was convicted by Magistrate Aden Stroude in the Port of Spain Fifth Magistrate’s Court of cruelty against the child.

He was fined $3,000 or in default sentenced to a prison term of three months’ hard labour. He has 28 days in which to pay the fine.

Celestine was found guilty of beating his 14-year-old daughter on June 2, 2016, causing suffering and injury to her health, a release from the police said yesterday.

The child reported the beating to a school social worker the day after the incident and it was referred to the police Child Protection Unit (CPU).

Celestine was charged by WPC Ann-Marie Rudder on June 4 last year.
