Councillor to Garcia: When will St Vedic school be opened?

Councilor for Reform/Manahambre Chris Hosein has called on Education Minister Anthony Garcia to say when the St Vedic School will be opened.

Speaking at the school’s 65th anniversary celebration last Saturday, Hosein said students are now in an environment that is not conducive to learning and he intends to draft questions for written answers by Garcia.

Hosein said he also plans to lobby Opposition MPs to have the questionnaire filed in the Parliament for Garcia to provide answers.

“Should we fail to get an answer, we will pursue our legal options, in the interest of the children’s education, their safety and their comfort. It pains me to see what these children have to face on a daily basis, much like the children at the Reform Hindu School.

The school is a stone’s throw away from a brand new, completed building that the ministry is refusing to open. Our children are in distress and this should not be the case especially given their very tender ages.”

He said according to the principal , a proposal was done in 2014 under which plans were drawn and other necessary work was completed in 2015.

Hosein said, soon after work halted at the school and no one was able to say what is the status of the project.

When contacted, Garcia said, “I have been speaking with some of the parents from the school. I will be meeting with them soon again along with the school’s PTA. Our technical officers at the ministry are looking at the matter.”
