From 4 am yesterday, residents again blocked Grants Trace and the road leading to and from La Brea and Point Fortin to draw attention to the condition of the road.

Police and the Fire Services were called in by commuters to remove the debris from two locations as traffic piled up for miles.

Scores of villagers were involved in this protest, setting fire to tyres, tree trunks and car parts across the road. They had done so on Monday and, yesterday, when police left, they blocked the road a second time. Police returned at 9 am yesterday and removed the debris.

Protesters vowed to continue their protests.

Carmen Sirjo, a resident of Grants Trace, said drivers were fed up of the dilapidated road, saying it was impassable.

“This area is totally neglected by the Government as they are fixing roads that are already in good condition,” Sirjo said. She complained that the road consisted of huge potholes and broken bridges.

Again yesterday, the protesting residents heaped blame on MP for La Brea Nicole Olivierre, who they said had neglected the districts of Aripero Village, Chinese Village, Grants Trace, Pepper Sauce Hill and Sobo Village, which fall in her La Brea constituency. They are calling on Minister of Works Rohan Sinanan to treat road repairs along the Southern Main Trace as a matter of urgency.

Olivierre has responded that the protests were well co-ordinated but the residents need to exercise patience.
