Police nab fake passenger in Couva robbery

One of two suspected bandits arrested by Couva police after a chase on Saturday, is believed to have been involved in a series of robberies in central Trinidad.

Police arrested the man on Saturday minutes after he and another person, posing as a “PH” driver, robbed a male passenger of personal items and $500. Reports are that on Saturday evening, the victim entered a car at Roop Junction, Couva.

The driver drove for a short distance then stopped. A front seat “passenger” got out, went to the back seat and announced a hold-up.

There was a struggle and the passenger was robbed of a cellular phone and cash, then ordered out of the car.

Police said an eyewitness saw the fight and contacted Couva police, who responded and a chase ensued. It ended at Rivulet Road, Couva, where the suspects crashed the vehicle and the driver ran into the nearby bush and escaped.

Sgt Ali, Cpl Baboolal, PC Duncan and other members of the Couva CID, however, arrested a 21-year-old man from Battoo Avenue, Marabella. Police later discovered the car was rented. They believe the men are responsible for a series of robberies in the Central division.

PC Duncan was expected to charge the suspect with robbery with violence. Once charged, he will appear in the Couva Magistrate’s Court.
