No firearm at El Dorado West

The Education Ministry yesterday said no firearm was found at the El Dorado West Secondary school. In a release, the ministry said it investigated a claim that a student of that school had a firearm while on his way to school.

The ministry activated its emergency protocol to scan and search all students, the school building and immediate surroundings, after the claim.

A team comprising police, community police representatives, PTA representatives, MTS officers and school safety officers reported no firearm was found after a thorough search.

The ministry said it places the safety and security of students as top priority in instances where such claims are made.

The school administration met with staff and stakeholder representatives and gave an update on the incident, after which, the school day resumed as normal.

“Minister of Education Anthony Garcia assured members of the public that there are policies and procedures in place to treat with instances such as the claim made today, but also cautioned members of the public against making false claims that can be disruptive not only to the school community but can cause panic and concern nationwide,” the release said.
