Precious Regis of Goodwood Police Youth Club shone out among a strong field of contestants to capture first place in the inaugural Mason Hall Police Youth Club talent contest held at the Mason Hall Community Centre last Saturday.

Regis, 11, a student of the Bon Accord Government Primary School, performed Beyonce’s “Listen” to secure the first prize of $2,500.

Speaking with Tobago Newsday after her victory, Regis said that she was surprise at the high level of competition but said she was a positive person and her achievement will be a plus for her emerging career as a singer.

Regis’ mentor, schoolteacher Don Campbell, said he was impressed with the quality of the dances and the diversity of performances from the participants, and that the competition has a positive future.

The surprise act of the evening was the duo of Afeisha Shade and Brianna Baynes of the Scarborough Police Youth Club, who, performing a hip hop dance, got their act right to capture the second prize of $1,500.

Copping the third prize of $1,000 were Anelia Joefield and Chelse Carrington, also of Scarborough Police Youth Club, who did a modern dance number.

Kishon Campbell, representing the Mason Hall Police Youth Club, playing Beyonce’s “I Look To You” on the pan, and Kelese Gray and Tonique Chance of the Scarborough Police Youth Club, who performed a dance to Ella Andell’s “Bring down the Power”, tied for fourth place.

Soloist Taejah Shade of Bethel Police Youth Club who was considered a strong contender for the title during the rehearsals, changed her selection on the evening of the contest and many persons felt that the decision did not work in her favour

Leader of the Mason Hall Police Youth Club, Dexter Edwards, said that he was pleased with the Club’s inaugural effort and following positive reviews, were looking forward to a more diverse production in 2018.

Edwards said that notwithstanding the current economic challenges, the organisation was committed to promoting activities geared towards youth and community development. He thanked sponsors of the top two prizes, Gas-e of Hope Village, and also noted assistance from Heritage Sports Store, Trinbago Down Town Electrical and members of the club including Merlyn Henry and Raquel Mills.
