Police exercises lead to guns and drugs

Five people were arrested, two guns seized and more than $200,000 in marijuana was destroyed in separate exercises conducted by police earlier this week.

In the Central Division, three men were arrested for being in possession of a gun on Tuesday.

Police said members of the Central Division, which included officers of the Chaguanas Hot Spot Unit, Central Division Major Crimes Unit, Chaguanas CID, Central Division Task Force and the Canine Branch conducted an exercise between 3 pm and 9 pm on Tuesday. Police found the three men – a 23-year-old and a 30-year-old, both of Phoenix Park Road, California and a 25-year-old of New City Avenue, Marabella – seated in a vehicle along Old Longdenville Road, Longdenville. Police searched the vehicle and found a Taurus revolver loaded with five rounds of .44 mm ammunition. In the Southern Division, a San Fernando couple was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm. Police executed a search warrant at the home of the couple, at Hermitage Village, San Fernando. During the search, a black and chrome Smith and Wesson pistol was found on top of a refrigerator. The couple – a 35- year-old man and a 32-year-old woman – were arrested.

Officers of the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit and the Air Support Unit conducted an exercise in Moruga on Tuesday between the hours of 6 am and 1 pm.

During the exercise police went to a forested area about two miles off Figarie Trace, Moruga, where they found a crop of 30 fully grown marijuana trees. Although no one was arrested, the trees with an estimated worth of $280,000, and a camp were destroyed.
