New challenge for UNC leader

THE EDITOR: The upcoming UNC internal election will be an interesting one. The current dilemma is whether the post of political leader can be contested before the expiration of the three-year term.

There are those who are saying it cannot and the leader must serve out her term because the party’s constitution doesn’t state that it can be done.

Others argue that the constitution does not state that it cannot be done.

The matter will more than likely head to the courts if pursued by party members.

However, there may be a saving grace for Kamla Persad-Bissessar as there is a clause in the laws which gives the executive the power to interpret clauses etc as it deems necessary. This may also be challenged in the court.

It is worthwhile to recall Persad-Bissessar’s history in the UNC. Thus far she has won all major challenges she has faced.
