Dog disappears after fireworks

THE EDITOR: On October 18 (Divali), I arrived home at approximately 10.55 pm. I live off School Street in Carenage.

I saw two of my dogs in the road totally traumatised.

The third, a young German Shepherd, was not around. They had burst a hole in the fence to escape.

Suddenly, a barrage of fireworks exploded three houses from me with deafening noise and falling debris on my rooftop. Fireworks were released every ten minutes, each time for about a 30-second duration.

This continued for about half an hour before I called the Carenage Police Station.

The station is situated about 50 metres obliquely opposite the source of the fireworks.

A constable answered the phone and I complained about the fireworks and that it was against the law. He replied he would send someone to enquire. The fireworks then stopped.

I called back after about an hour and asked if a charge was laid against the perpetrators. His response was that the decision lay with the constable who spoke with the people involved to take the necessary action.

I searched the area that night and the following days but did not find the Shepherd, which cost me $5,000. I made an official report the following day at the station.

The response by the police — to a crime happening a few metres from a station — in refusing to take action is shameful. Seemingly, our society is on the verge of collapse through those charged with the responsibility of upholding the law not fulfilling their mandate.

I call on the Commissioner of Police and the Police Complaints Authority to take action.
