Met Office: More rain

Even as clean-up work cannot be started since flood waters have not subsided, the Met Office yesterday put the nation on alert to prepare for more showers.

In a press release, the Met Office said weather activity associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is forecast to affect this country during the course of this day.

“TT will experience cloudy conditions accompanied by periods of light to moderate showers or rain, some heavy at times, with an 80 per cent(high) chance of thunder showers. Localised street or flash flooding is likely in heavy or prolonged downpours and this can further exacerbate areas that remain inundated from recent rainfall,” the Met Office said.

Gusty winds may be experienced in the areas of heavy showers or thunder showers, and there is also the likelihood of landslides/landslips in prone areas. People are advised to be vigilant and cautious and pay close attention to Met Office regular weather updates at 6am, 10am, 3pm and 6pm by visiting the website at www.metoffice.gov.tt/forecast.

ODPM head Capt Neville Wint yesterday said the organisation is liaising with all regional corporations in anticipation of more bad weather.

“The first-response agencies are on stand-by to assist the municipal corporation. They have activated their emergency plan in light of the incident last week Wednesday and the fact that most of those affected corporations are now recovering from the impact.

The national system is still activated from the last event and the relevant agencies are on notice and stand-by to respond when needed.”
