“There is a lot more to come” regarding allegations of corruption at the Estate Management Business Development Corporation (EMBD) under the former People’s Partnership government. Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi dropped this hint during yesterday’s meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives. Al-Rawi said audits done into alleged corruption were different from audits done in accordance with Section 66 of the Constitution.

Referring to the EMBD, Al-Rawi reminded MPs there are “massive allegations of corruption and significant misbehaviour in public office,” in that matter. He explained because of this, “it would be premature to speak to the litigation and criminal investigation side of it just yet.” Al-Rawi said some information on this matter is public knowledge but there is more to come.

On October 16, Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs Stuart Young said there was alleged bid-rigging and cartel-like behaviour in the award of 10 contracts worth $200 million at the EMBD. Young said legal action had been taken against five contractors. He also said legal action will be taken against the EMBD’s former line minister Dr Roodal Moonilal.
