Caimans invade homes

Residents of Warrenville in Cunupia and surrounding areas, affected by rising flood waters, yesterday had to chase away caimans which invaded their homes

Residents said there are several rice fields in the area which are breeding grounds for the caimans and the rising flood waters caused the reptiles to swim into yards and make their way into houses.

Farmer Kumar Balroop said he is accustomed seeing caimans in the rice fields but yesterday when he awoke to discove his house flooded, he saw two caimans swimming in his kitchen.

The animals were captured, taken out of the house and released into a nearby river.

Other residents complained that despite several calls to the corporation for help in gaving the caimans removed, no help came.

Another resident told Newsday that he had to kill a caiman to stop it from attacking his chickens.

Others expressed fear that the rising flood waters could bring in more menacing wildlife such as the venemous coral snake and centipede.

Several bridges remained covered with flood waters and roads were deemed impassable resulting in hundreds of people being unable to go to work, and school children were kept at home for their own safety.
