US hammer TT women in Pan Am hockey

The United States overcame a two-goal deficit to hammer Trinidad and Tobago 7-2 yesterday, as the 2017 Indoor Pan American Hockey Cup began in Georgetown, Guyana.

Veteran Blair Wynne gave TT an early lead, after only two minutes of play, while Zene Henry extended the advantage when she struck the backboard in the 26th. But the Americans stormed back with a double from Mary Beth Barham, in the 27th and 29th, while Sammy Popper put them in front in the 32nd. Ali Campbell netted the fourth goal for the US, in the 33rd, followed by Popper’s second item, in the 34th. Madison Orobono got her name on the scoresheet in the 37th and Campbell completed the convincing fightback in the 40th.

The TT women’s squad was carded to meet Uruguay in another round-robin contest last evening, and they will also be in action today against Argentina.

Also, the national men’s team began their campaign last evening against Argentina, and will meet hosts Guyana today.

The winners from the respective men’s and women’s categories will advance to the 2018 Women’s Indoor Hockey World Cup, which will be contested in Berlin, Germany.
