Waiting to die

THE EDITOR: Soon after this Government came into office, one of the first things — actually I think it is the only thing — it did for Sangre Grande was to break down part of a perfectly good, strong concrete fence enclosing the Turure Public Cemetery and replace it with a fancy fence.

Some benches were placed by the fence. Whenever we pass by we would laugh and say, “Look at all the ghosts sitting on the benches.” I mean, who would want to go and sit on benches outside a cemetery to pass the time away?

I went to a private doctor and met an old woman there who told me of her horror stories at one of our hospitals. Our doctors and nurses are not to be blamed. Yes we have some uncaring ones with poor work ethics, but the majority by and large are hardworking, dedicated and committed. Our system, our culture, our politics, our lack of vision are among the many reasons that our hospitals are unmanageable and offer poor services.

My aha moment came when the old woman said to me, “If you don’t have money and you are sick in this country, go and sit down by the cemetery and wait to die.” I now understand why those benches were placed outside the Turure Cemetery. Still would like to know who got the contract to do that job though.
