TT's Ferreira captures gold at Carifta Triathlon Champs

Luke Ferreira won gold for Trinidad and Tobago in the Boys 11 to 12 triathlon event at the inaugural Carifta Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships in Barbados, yesterday.

Ferreira claimed gold in 25 minutes, 08.97 seconds (25:08.97), while TT also took the bronze medal as Justin Boynes finished in 26:41.19. In the boys 11 to 12 category, the athletes were required to swim 200 metres, ride 7.5 kilometres and run 1.5 kilometres.

In the boys 13-15 triathlon, Darian Nimblett copped silver for TT in 35:41.05. The athletes in this category swam 400m, rode for 10k and ran 2.5k.

On Saturday's opening day of the Championships, both Rachel Grosberg and Ayomide Gilbert-Semper earned bronze in the sprint triathlon 16 to 19 event which included a 750m swim, a 20k ride and a 5k run. In the girls category, Grosberg snatched bronze in one hour, 15 minutes, 46.55 seconds (1:15:46.55) and Gilbert-Semper took bronze in the boys category in 1:08:48.71.

The Championships also included a fun mixed triathlon relay event. The relay events allowed the participants to meet athletes from other countries as each team consisted of athletes from different countries. Some of the other countries that competed at the Championships were Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Bahamas.
