Prison escapee shot dead

A man who escaped from Carrera Island prison in 2015, was shot dead by police on Monday evening. At about 7 pm, Leroy Mohammed, 36, was at a house in Cashew Gardens, Chaguanas.

Police received a tip-off and surrounded the house. As the officers called on Mohammed to surrender, Mohammed ran out of the house with gun blazing and he tried to shoot his way out. Officers returned gunfire and Mohammed was injured. He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police reciovered a .38 revolver, three spent shells and two ‘live’ rounds at the scene of the shooting. Mohammed, also known as Reddo, was serving a 12-year sentence at the island prison for robbery with aggravation. On Independence Day in 2015, Mohammed escaped from Carrera, along with Steve Mc Gilvary, who was serving 30 years for unlawful killing.

Prison officers made their regular checks on that day and just before 7 pm they discovered a rope hanging over one of the walls. Mc Gilvary is still at large.
