Senate President Christine Kangaloo appealed to senators to remember this country's regional neighbours who were affected by Hurricane Irma and who now face the threat of Hurricane Maria.
Kangaloo made her appeal as senators delivered Republic Day greetings in the Senate. Kangaloo said while this country has been blessed during its 41 years as a republic, thoughts and prayers should be extended to people in other Caricom countries at this time.
In delivering greetings on behalf of the Government, Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon said this country has recorded many achievements and there is much to celebrate. She also noted the country continues to have many challenges and urged citizens to join hands in dealing with them. Opposition Senator Wade Mark said TT still had a long way to go in realising its full potential as a republic. Mark described recent attacks on local media personnel as an example of this.
Independent Senator Dr Dhanayshar Mahabir said Republic Day offers citizens the opportunity to, "reflect on our maturity."
